Seattle pizza shop Northlake Tavern is closing after 65 years

A local favorite is closing up shop after more than six decades of serving up pizza and good times.

Northlake Tavern announced it will close on Jan. 31, 2023. The tavern, located at the north end of Lake Union, opened near the University of Washington in 1954.

The spot became a classic hangout for generations of UW students and locals seeking a hearty slice of pizza, drinks and unchanging vibes.

The current owner Abdoullah has been with Northlake Tavern since 1981 and shared he is retiring to focus on his health.

"I want to say thank you so much for all your help throughout the years. My heart and soul will always be the Northlake Tavern," Abdoullah said in a statement.

A farewell party for Abdoullah and Northlake will be held on Jan. 31 from 5 p.m. to close.

While it's last call for Northlake Tavern, the space will remain a pizza joint as the torch is passed to Big Mario's.

Abdoullah's statement says, "I am happy that the Big Mario’s family will continue in the Northlake tradition bringing quality pizza and hospitality to our community on Northlake."

Big Mario's has three popular locations in Seattle on Queen Anne, Capitol Hill and the Frelard zone between Fremont and Ballard. The shops are known for big slices, pull tabs, drinks, games and options for all-ages dining.

Jason Lajeunesse of Big Mario's says they plan to keep much of Northlake Tavern's charm and decor intact with a target opening date of mid-to-late March 2023.
